Happy Hallowrup!

Happy Halloween Twinstiqers! Well, maybe not just yet but there is less than a week to go now! Though personally, I like to get in the spirit all month long. Thankfully, that's been relatively easy this year thanks to the the new movie Zombieland: Double Tap, and new game (re-)releases such as Ghostbusters, Vs Castlevania, and MediEvil.

Don't feel like you have to spend a lot of scratch to enjoy the season though. Sometimes grabbing a candy bar and some popcorn and just sitting down to watch a favorite scary movie works just as well. Whatever you like to do, I hope you've been getting as much enjoyment out of this October as I have. And even if not, just remember that you've still got a few days left to get in on the fun!

What's everybody playing this weekend?

Space Marine is Still Awesome – Replay Review From Scroo

Eight years ago in ages long past, the year of the Emperor 2011, came a grim dark shooter from Relic, THQ and Games Workshop about an event that takes place 38,000 years into the future. A third person action shooter where the greenskin Ork xenos have overrun the Forge World of Graia and threaten the existence of one of the great manufactorums of the empire. Untold millions of the Emperor's children are already dead. The Imperial Guard are outnumbered and outgunned. They have themselves suffered great losses including their senior commanding officer and are lead now only by a second lieutenant named, Mira Nero. If it wasn't for the great War Titan, Invictus, the empire of man may just cut their losses and abandon Graia. But the honored war machine's value is deemed absolute and it is decided that a small team of Astartes will be deployed to recover and secure the Titan at all costs. Captain Titus, of the Ultramarines, along with two of his trusted battle brothers are set upon the task and dropped into the middle of the fray. What comes is a battle of epic size, betrayal and bureaucracy along side more of a threat than even they imagined.

Gather round children and I shall tell you of my most recent play through of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine. Read more

WRUP My Side

Good Lord. It's the weekend already? That's pretty cool. And you know what that means! It's a Cody WRUP!

Yup. Definitely time for relaxing with Music, Games, Gambling, Blood Combat, and whatever it is you do for fun! Here we really like Video games.

What Are People Playing?

Greywolfe: well, here we are again.  i'm trying the next spyro game [spyro 2].  i'm about 25% of the way in [according to the in-game statistics] and so far, it's mostly pretty ok.  the speedways can die in a fire, though.  [they're crazy, timed, flying/fast reflex-required sections.]  as for the rest:  trundling through all the ways off of kyrandia in kyrandia 3, building silly decks because of trick opponents in etherlords 2, grinding up my lockpicking in quest for glory 4 and thinking about whatever game should replace inside [now that it's done for youtube.] - and lest we forget:  titan quest streams tonight and tomorrow night.  i'm in act two.  last week was some amount of hilarious on-screen failure, so i hope i can redeem myself, this week.

AJ I just picked up the (new) Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, so I imagine my son and I (and perhaps, my daughter too) will be playing that a good bit. Also, probably some Road Rash, either on my Mega Sg or PlayStation 3.

ScrooGoing to be a busy one for me. It's family reunion time so I'll be BBQ'ing the whole weekend. I've had meat marinating since Tuesday and I'm looking forward to cooking it. Tri-tip, ball-tip, chicken, hamburgers and hot dogs. About 30 lbs of beef and 15 lbs of chicken. Not counting the burgers and dogs. All cooked on a trailer BBQ with two adjustable racks (a normal flat rack and a Brazilian grill), a smoker and three gas burners for beans or corn or whatever we choose. Plus I'll have 5 ice chests full of beer and water. There will be Horseshoes and Cornhole and kids with water guns and it should be a good semi-redneck time out here. Sunday morning I'll re-fire the grill and make breakfast and coffee and folks will pack up and take off.

Tru: This is my WRUP:

YodaI mean. Bro. It's gnna be some more Warframe. One of the Warframes I've wanted since day one is going to be done building on Saturday and I can't wait to try her out. Also just got the last part to another one that looks cool on Friday morning. So I'll definately be farming for the rest of the components required to start building him.And I did re-download Space Marine so maybe if I need a Space Ninja break (HA!) I'll head down nostalgia lane. Also not a game, but Ad Astra comes out this weekend and I'm for sure gnna watch that and stuff.

The Sony PlayStation: A 2×12-Year Retrospective

Well, it's September 9th, 2019, which means its time for another 12/12 console anniversary. Yes, today makes 24 years since Sony's very first PlayStation console was first released in North America. Though Sega and Nintendo pretty much owned the home console landscape at the time they decided to enter the frey, a combination of smart business decisions and key partnerships, in addition to some pretty massive missteps by the competition helped Sony to quickly become the dominant force in the industry. A position they have continued to enjoy for the majority of their console-making career.

Sony first began their foray into game consoles in the late 1980s when they entered into a partnership with Nintendo to create a CD-ROM add-on called the Play Station for the upcoming Super Nintendo console. The partnership was rocky though, particularly when Nintendo went behind their back to form another partnership with Sony's competitor Philips. At one point Sony even approached Sega with a proposal to a similar partnership to the one they had with Nintendo, but Sega, unfortunately, declined. Eventually, Sony decided to abandon the project altogether in favor of creating their very own gaming system for the next console generation. This, of course, is what would go on to become the PlayStation.

After settling on engineering the console to specialize in handling three-dimensional polygonal graphics, Sony then had to figure out how to get games made for its system. For this, they mainly relied on securing hundreds of deals for third-party games, both exclusive and multi-platform. In addition, they also acquired the British video game company Psygnosis which, along with creating the fantastic wipEout series for them (one particularly excellent entry of which appears on our list below), also had the unintended benefit of resulting in a more economical, dedicated game development system for their new console.

Finally, Sony needed to figure out how to get a jump on the already long-established competition. They accomplished this in two ways. With Nintendo, they primarily did this simply by beating them to market, since their next generation Nintendo 64 console wasn't even ready for release until the following year. And with Sega, they simply found a way to capitalize on their blunders, particularly by undercutting them on pricing. By selling the PlayStation for $100 less than Sega's Saturn, they made it a lot more attractive to otherwise undecided console shoppers who couldn't quite see the additional cost benefit of Sega's offering.

Even with a leg up though, without the right games, the PlayStation brand wouldn't have lasted for very long. But great games are something that every PlayStation console has always had in spades. Read on for our list of 12 of the best ones the original PlayStation had to offer.

Games Are WRUP

Well this week is more interesting than last. Gears 5 is out on Monday and I have to say I think it looks pretty good. It's the first Gears since the... first Gears, that I've been interested in and I'll probably pick it up. Supposedly it plays somewhat similarly to a non-linear over world title that has a slight similarity to something like Zelda or Darksiders, where the player will use the world map to travel to "dungeons" and play through those. I may have that analogy a little mixed up but it sounds like a bit of a change. And It's bound to be a pretty good sized title since the download is 80GB and the system requirements still recommend a Ryzen 3 and an RX580 to run well. So I don't imagine the level of detail has been vastly improved from previous titles. Either that or it's being given with uncompressed audio or something like that. And the videos I've seen of game play seem to look pretty cool. Read more
