The Days Of Our WRUP

Fall officially starts this weekend and honestly I'm not ready for it. Not that I'm complaining about the cooler weather it's just that I know every restaurant, coffee shop, pub, food truck and grill will start shoving that awful pumpkin spice crap in everything they sell. That stuff belongs in one thing and that's pumpkin pie. The end. Let's get to WRUP.

Unity, has really hurt their trust with developers by suggesting changing their pay model to a "per install" fee. Meaning that if a developer uses Unity to create a game then every time that game is installed on a device that developer owes Unity money. This of course has created ire among the whole of the dev studio community and reasonably so. Especially because Unity has decided the rule changes will also be retroactive so anyone who has used Unity before will owe money for those installs going back forever. Or at least they will if the new rule actually goes into place. It's very possible there's been enough push-back that Unity is backing off some or all the proposed changes. Re-Logic, the developers behind Terraria, who don't really even use Unity, have even donated a great deal of money towards open source engines to show solidarity. You can read about that here from PC Gamer. It's more than just a little unfortunate that a relatively user friendly source like Unity is pushing for such an unfriendly user model. There's every chance some smaller studios would just be wiped out from retroactive fees, just as one example. I guess we just have to see how this plays out.

I don't have anything else to look at this time around. I've been a busy mofo again and though that's good for my wallet, it's not good for my WRUPs. So enjoy your weekend and your pumpkin spice garbage that comes with fall. I will judge you silently from my chair until spring.

What are we playing?

AJ: Avenging Spirit and Cotton 2.

Scrooloose: I think I'll be finishing the Sniper Elite 5 campaign and then I'll probably hop back into Armored Core 6.
