New Nintendo eShop Releases: Awesome! It’s a Party!

Mario Party 10 hits this week, so go gather up whoever you would currently consider to be your friends (though probably not for much longer). Whenever I think of Mario Party, I can't help but recall one of my favorite Penny Arcade comics. Now, moving forward, you will too. You're welcome.

Also new this week, 3DS game, Fossil Fighters: Frontier. Roll a 6 or better to see all of this week's new releases after the break. (...Or don't roll. Either way.)

Class Action on Xbox 360 Scratched Discs to Reopen

A federal appeals court has stated that an erroneous ruling is grounds to reopen the class action suit against Microsoft.  The plaintiffs allege that a flaw in the Xbox 360 system causes a spinning disc to be scratched under normal playing conditions.
The supposed flaw is caused by the omission of rubber pads surrounding the lens assembly, a common safety feature in most other optical disc drives.  Vibrations (such as those from a sub woofer) and tilting the system can cause the disc to tilt and hit the assembly, causing circular scratches on the disc which can render it unreadable.

While Microsoft has a disc replacement program in place, discs by other publishers, audio discs, and movies that are played in the 360 will not be replaced by them.

Throwback Thursdays: WildSnake

WildSnake felt special to me the first time I got my hands on the controller.  It was one of those games my friends and I discovered together after a binge at the used games store.  Sitting around passing the controller, using trial-and-error to figure out how to play, we just became captivated.  The game charmed you with is personality, so even when you lost, you felt like laughing at the absurdity of it all.
The rules are simple enough.  Snakes of various colors drop down and settle into a well. Any two snakes of the same color are eliminated when they touch.  Like Tetris, don't let them pile up to the top, or your game will be over.  However, these reptiles will continue to slither when gaps are introduced as others are removed.  If you're fortunate, unforeseen combos will result, removing entire swaths of the scaly creatures from play.  In other cases, the next target you wanted to rid yourself of could be walled off.
As you progress, the game will introduce snakes of a variety of new colors, and eventually maintaining organization is something you can't possibly rely on.  As the pace quickens, you must simply try your best to hold it together since you can't possibly predict the domino effect you will unleash when your serpent touches down.  What unfolds may be surprising at times, but never feels frustrating or out of control, and eventually you will develop a sense for picking the right move.
Luckily, there are a few wild cards that could save you from an overwhelming situation.  Once in a while a flashing snake will descend, making any snake it touches disappear, along with all others of the same color.  In other cases, an uncontrollable grey snake plows downwards, destroying all snakes in its path.  Again, as gaps are introduced, the slithering continues, perhaps further emptying your well.
I don't know why I haven't heard this game mentioned more often. It's unfortunate that more people haven't been exposed to it and the cult following I thought surely would have formed around it is nowhere to be found.  Nowadays, it would seem like a perfect candidate for re-release due to the demand for fun, bite sized mobile experiences.  It's a shame that it was never added to Nintendo's Virtual Console library, as I wish more people had the opportunity to easily check it out.
The SNES cartridge is cheap enough to find second hand, which I highly recommend over the claustrophobic Game Boy entry, and I urge you to track it down if you can.  Either playing competitively or just taking turns, I guarantee a night of fun for you and your friends!  I hope this highlight will bring much deserved awareness to a lost gem.

Deathwatch – Tyranid Invasion Announced!

Rodeo Games has announced their new game: Deathwatch - Tyranid Invasion. This is yet another game in the Games Workshop Warhammer 40k universe that has been announced recently and I couldn't be more excited. Deathwatch will be a turn based strategy game that will also include online battles if you get that urge to war with your friends. Coming to iOS this summer, the game follows the titular Deathwatch. The Deathwatch in 40k is a group of Space Marines brought together from all chapters of Space Marines and whose exclusive job is to stop the Tyranid threat.

I'm not usually excited by iOS game announcements or releases, but there is something about Games Workshop's IP that drive me insane. I need to get my hands on this game. If you want so too, you'll need an iPad 4, iPad Mini 2, iPhone 5/5C, or an iPod Touch 5 or above. The game will be one of the first games to launch on iOS built in Unreal Engine 4, so it should be beautiful.

PlayStation Vue Rolls Out, New Xbox One Owners Get Sling TV Trial

Sony has begun rolling out the PlayStation Vue service in select cities, starting at $50, with a 7-day free trial available.  Meanwhile, a new purchase of the Xbox One console at the Microsoft Store nets you a 3 month free trial to Sling TV, with basic packages starting at $20.  For more details, hit the jump.
There's a growing number of options for cord cutters as competing services appear on the market.  Some, like Netflix, provide on-demand access to a selection of shows and movies.  Others, such as Sling TV and PlayStation Vue, aim to provide primary access to TV networks and stream them over your internet connection, as opposed to subscribing to cable, satellite, or simply using a terrestrial antenna.

The PlayStation Vue service is available now on PS3 and PS4 in New York, Philadelphia and Chicago, offering over 50 channels at its basic $49.99 per month package, with $59.99 giving you 61 channels, and $69.99 giving you access to a staggering 84 channels.  For a complete list, click here and scroll down to where you can select your city.  A 7-day free trial for these areas is available now on the Sony Entertainment Network website.  Still missing, however, are Disney, HBO, Showtime, and Turner networks.

Sling TV is available now on many more devices, but right now if you purchase an Xbox One at the Microsoft Store (online or physical locations) you can get a 3 month trial, a good way to get started with the service.  Check the Sling website for more information on availability and channel listings.  Packages start at a very competitive $20, include channels from Disney, AMC, Time Warner, ESPN, and more.

Since you need to pay for internet service in order to access both of these services, Sling TV's basic package coupled with Netflix seems like a very economical way to go, but PlayStation Vue offers a ton of variety and value, just not in many locations or on many devices yet.

Are any of you planning on cutting the cord?  What services seem most attractive to you?  Let us know what you think in the comments!

The Future of Final Fantasy XI

Tomorrow, March 19th at 12AM PDT, you can watch a live press conference on what's in store for Square Enix's long-running MMO.  Even though FFXIV has surpassed it at 2.5M subscribers (according to the last few frames of this video), FFXI's 1M is nothing to scoff at, and remains a steady revenue stream, according to Square Enix's 2014 annual investor report.  It's hard to believe the game has been around almost 13 years!

PSN: Spring Fever Sale Week 3

Another Week, another entry in the Spring Fever Sale on the PSN.

This Week sees the release of Jamestown Plus (-10% during this week of the sale), which is an extended rerelease of the very well received 4 player co-op shmup from 2011, exclusively for the PS4. It comes with new ships, level, a new story chapter and a remastered soundtrack.

The price for most mediocre sale goes to Assassin’s Creed Unity and Rogue, both available for 20% off, while the rest of the franchise gets around 50% off.

Speaking of mediocre: The Transformers movies are on sale too. Exploding Robots 1 to 3 are available for $7.99 each (both SD and HD), Age of Extinction for $10.99 (again: both SD and HD versions).

For a full list, head over to the Playstation Blog.
