Hey everyone, happy Sunday and word to your various family figures. It's me, Scrooloose, and today is a short WRUP. So let's go to it.
Well, there's a new PS5 and PS5 Pro coming and it's skinned up to look like a classic PS1 in honor of PlayStations 30th anniversary. IGN has info here But the gist is that these are some very limited runs of new PS5 consoles that will somewhat similarly resemble the now classic PS1. In IGN's article there you can see that the less limited edition will be a PS5 slim digital only version. That version will have a disc drive cover but that will only seal up an empty space. You'll have to purchase a disc drive separately if you want to actually use physical discs. Don't want to buy the whole set? That's okay because if the nostalgia bug has you only a little infested you can still get just a controller styled in the old PS1 regalia. Preorders will be available the day of the 26th of this very month of September in the current year, 2024.
Now here's where I editorialize for a moment. Why are these so limited? I can only speculate that it's a matter of creating false exclusivity by giving people the impression that these machines will somehow be collectibles that will gain value over time. There's literally no reason Sony couldn't run production on these for like a year before cutting them off. They have the tooling, afterall. But I guess that doesn't instill enough FOMO in buyers. Instead some folks will buy multiples of these and then scalp them on a site like ebay or something and other folks eat it up and give away perhaps many times their worth in order to have #356 of 12,300.
For the record, I actually think it's cool to release versions of PS5 that are retro styled. I think it's nice looking and that the grey suits the box better than that bright white. I do like that there are wired connections available. As good as bluetooth connectivity is now, there are still things left to be desired especially when it comes to uptime on a battery powered device. A big negative for me here is also that the September 26th preorder date is only available if you have a PSN account. Otherwise you'll need to wait 'till October 10th and by then I would imagine only the PS5 Digital would still even be available as the article eludes. There's also nothing here about pricing, but I would imagine it's a little more than the normal versions of these machines.
Anyway, good luck to you if you're throwing yourself into the virtual lottery Sony is making this out to be.
Tiny Glade is coming out on Monday the 23rd and I'll be buying the crap out of it. This is a pretty widely anticipated cozy builder where you can just create cool peaceful little dioramas to your hearts content. I played the demo a bit earlier today and made a very basic little structure but it felt awesome to build. I'll put a little screenshot in here of what I was able to do with the very limited tools the demo provided. There are no materials to manage, no city planning, no combat and no pressure. Just an awesome little spot in a serene cute little space and some tools to use that are far more simple than they have any right to be. And you can pet the sheep.
Alright everyone, have a great rest of your weekend. Speaking of peaceful little cozy hovels -- I need to get back to blasting xenos in Space Marine 2.
What are we playing?
Scrooloose: I bet you can infer from context based on this very WRUP.
Greywolfe: finished off ultima 3! it was a blast, as always. so i've picked up a game i beat about ten years ago now, to see how i still feel about it and that game is adventures of pip. it's a beautiful looking pixel platformer with a great central gimmick [pip can be different resolutions: a pixel, 8-bit and 16-bit and each resolution has slightly different movement abilities], a fun-ish soundtrack and some somewhat frustrating pixel-perfect platforming. not a bad little game, still, all these years later. [and balatro, of course. but now i'm just playing mostly for fun and not really to open up jokers or anything, because i've got MOST of them.]
AJ: I somewhat recently acquired Moving Out 2 and a 25th Anniversary Collector's Edition of the Genesis/SNES classic Flashback for the Nintendo Switch so I may play those a bit this weekend.
