AJ’s Picks: The 12 Best Games of 2018

Happy 2019, everyone! Is it just me or do the years feel like they are flying by these days? Before we get too far into the new year, let's not forget to take a look back at the one that's just passed and make note of all the truly great gaming experiences we got out of it. As it turns out, 2018 was a pretty fantastic year for video games - and I have quite a bit of praise to heap on some of them. So without further ado, here are the 12 best games of 2018 (as selected by me).

WRUP Remake

Well the Resident Evil 2 remake is out and it's pretty good. I say that coming in as a guy who didn't really like the RE series back in the day. It's a complete overhaul and the game is all the better for it. I never did try the one shot demo that Capcom released a week or so back so I got a real intro to the game when I started playing the first time. There are two campaigns, one for each of the two main characters and hopefully the rest of the game is good enough to warrant a second play through so I can see that for myself. I did record some early footage (about 25 minutes), and here it is for your viewing... pleasure... I guess. ***This is gory stuff guys, so if that bothers you just don't click that video. Trust me. Weather WRUP

I'm sorry, I'm just not thinking of anything special to post for this week's WRUP. So I'll talk about the weather. We've been getting a lot of rain here. That's great because we need it, but too much of a good thing is a possibility for sure. The burn areas may wash out and cause some land slides. Road closures have already been taking place on and off to try and avoid people getting caught up in some of that. Looks like we'll get a break for the next couple of days and that's what we need honestly, so here's hoping the water doesn't just run off and leave us too dry. The next storms don't look quite as big as these last two so that would be welcome. I'm hoping that today I can open the house up and let some fresh air in since it looks like I'm not going to be working this weekend much, if at all. Yeah... boring. Maybe there will be games at least? Read more

Doom 2016, Almost Three Years On

One of the first things I wanted to do when I got my new high refresh rate Freesync monitor set up was play something I knew ran really smoothly to begin with in order to really feel the difference from a 1080p, 60 hertz, non adaptive sync panel and the new 144 hertz screen at 1440p. So I reinstalled Doom. At first of course I was pretty blown away by the glassy smoothness at high frame rates, but I was also reminded -Doom is friggin awesome. Read more

Ramble WRUP 2019 V-0.01 Alpha

Epic Game Store has a new refund policy that matches Steam's policy. That's fine I guess but Steam's policy is that if you've played for less than two hours you can get refunded. I feel like I hardly ever play a game for less than two hours and know if it's something I like or not. There have been a few: Dead Island is one of those games. So were The Evil WIthin and Assassain's Creed Brotherhood...Ugh even thinking about them now... I never did get any of them refunded, though I really should have because they are truly bad and boring experiences. Some my disagree I guess, and that's okay. Annnywhooooo, coming back from this tangent, Epic also has What Remains of Edith Finch for free until January 24th. Do yourself a favor and grab that if you like a good narrative. It's kind of in the same vein as The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. Just a simple walking simulator that you can likely finish up in a single session. Read more

Twinstiq Staff Picks for their Top Games of 2018

Hey everybody it's me, Scrooloose and the rest of us here at Twinstiq. How's it going? Good? You want a soda? No? Would you settle for a slap-dash list of games we liked from last year (and some prior) written in no particular order, some ranked and some not, hastily put together and edited in collaboration over the last few days with no real format? Yeah, we thought you'd like that. Read more

Happy 2019 WRUP

Hey everyone! Well we made it to another year, yay us. There could be some good gaming stuff happening these coming months and I'm looking forward to finding out just WTF that's gonna be. New hardware is certain, new titles for sure, some scandalous behavior from some company or other is likely on the docket. Hopefully it'll be a year of surprises and not just in gaming and PC / Console news. We'll just have to wait and see I suppose. In the meantime we work, we sleep, we play games. Read more

The Surprise Goodness of Subnautica – A Review From Scroo

I love the ocean. In fact I once had an opportunity to work on an ocean research vessel that routed between California and Hawaii. I didn't take the job. I was too young and I wasn't ready to do something that big yet. But thinking back on it now I kick myself. I've swam with sharks and sting rays in Bora Bora. I've swam in the shallows in Tahiti. It was lovely to be there floating in that warm, crystal clear water. But deep -truly deep water, scares me. Earth's oceans are the least explored places on the planet. And for good reason. It's a beautiful place, romantic and mysterious. It piques our human curiosity and makes us wonder while also being a dark, hostile environment that would crush anything not meant for it's cold depths to dust without a moments hesitation. Subnautica is a story about an ocean. But also more. Stick with me and I'll tell you what I thought of my play through. Read more
