E3 2015: Nintendo Direct

Way too tired,
Coffee!
AAAH, it’s starting already. I missed the first 10 seconds. Nooooo! And they are muppets! Love it already. My body isn’t ready yet, but give me a second and some coffee. And now they turn into Star Fox characters. I really love those Nintendo Directs.

Ok, Star Fox is also the first game we see. Looks ok, I guess?

Reggie now. And he just told us: No NX until 2016. Why even announce it then? What the hell Nintendo? Are you kidding me? You want to show your immediate future? Let me guess, you talk for Amiibos now for 30 minutes. Screw you! Oh, no he talks about Mario Maker. Yeah, we’ve seen that already. Nothi AMIIBOS! I KNEW IT!

kthxbye

Zelda Triforce Heroes? Never been a Zelda fan. Sue me.

Oh, Hyrule Warriors. That’s how you get me to play Zelda, but I already posted the trailer some days ago.

Some more puppets, Trisha in the team internal chat distracting me, and some Metroid? The game we’ve seen in the Nintendo World Championships…..ooooooooohhhhh Fire Emblem Fate. This looks really cool. Wait a second. Is that… wow, that’s the best cell-shading I’ve ever seen.

What the hell is this now? Hatsune Miku style music and… looks a bit like Persona. No idea what that was. The symbol reminded me a bit of persona. Need to watch that whole thing again when awake.

Ohhh, Xenoblade now. Only started playing the first one when it came to the 3DS and love it so far. Did get bogged down with the sidequests though.

Animal Crossing. Never played it, was thinking about getting it for the 3DS. It’s the card Amiibo one. NEEXT!

A WiiU Animal Crossing party game? And the Amiibos -.- I’m out again. Amiibo Festival my ass. Until I get all 3 Splatoon Amiibos, you lost me with that shit.

Yoshi’s Woolly World. Ok, that Amiibo is cute. NO! No more Amiibos until I get the Splatoon one! Ok, maybe a woolly Yoshi….
Game still looks cute. I would totally play it, would it not be for my backlog.

Oh, that supposed Pokemon Killer. Yo-Kai Watch. Heard it’s a big hit in Japan.

Paper Mario meets 3D Mario? Looks pretty cool. Not much like traditional Mario games, but cool. Mario & Luigi – Paper Jam. K. Have to keep an eye on that.

Mario Tennis for the WiiU. Loved the Mario Tennis RPG thing on the Gameboy, this seems to be a straight up arcade Tennis. Meh.

Mario Maker now. The levels we’ve seen in the World Championship looked really cool, but I don’t trust community made levels. And Amiibo support. And a 8bit Mario Amiibo. Looks cool, but it’s another Amiibo that isn’t Splatoon.

Reggie talking transformation again. Looks like that’s the end of this Direct. Need to watch the first half of it again, since my brain was still asleep. Not a big show, certainly not up there with Sony or Microsoft, but Nintendo is kinda doing their own thing anyway.

Anyway, Square Enix is up next. So I have to hurry.

New Nintendo eShop Releases: Harvest Moon

Harvest Moon comes to the Wii U Game Boy Advance Virtual Console this week. Specifically, Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town, which, itself, was a remake of the earlier PlayStation Harvest Moon game, Back To Nature. For those unfamiliar with the series, it's kind of like FarmVille, except that the Harvest Moon games came out way earlier and were infinitely better. Also out this week, LEGO Jurassic World, and a new version of Dr Mario for the 3DS. Reap what you have virtually sown, then jump past the break to see more of this week's new releases.

New Nintendo eShop Releases: Lord of Magna

After last month's spectacular Mega May on the Nintendo eShop, it's not surprising to see things slow down a little. This week, there isn't a whole lot to choose from. The one title that does look interesting is a turn-based JRPG for the 3DS. The game is called Lord of Magna: Maiden Heaven. You can read more about it here, or by clicking the link to the Nintendo page for it below. Also out this week is the Angry Video Game Nerd...game (for the 3DS as well), and a Pac-Man puzzle game for the Wii U Super Nintendo Virtual Console. Wait for your turn, select your target, and then  jump past the break to see more of this week's new releases.

  • Pac-Attack (Super Nintendo Virtual Console) (Bandai Namco Games, 2 players, simultaneous, $7.99)
  • Adventures of Pip (TicToc Games, 1 player, $14.99)

Nintendo Direct Micro Megapost, incl. aprox. 4726544 screenshots

Nintendo listened to me and gave us another Nintendo Direct. I love those. This time, it’s a small one. How small? Micro. AHAHA…
I…I’m sorry, no idea what’s up with me today. Anyway, if you want to watch it, it’s embedded above. Rather want to read about it? Then continue.

First off, we have a new Chibi Robo for the 3DS, release sometime in October.

The game is a 2.5D platformer and the game mechanics revolve around the name giving Zip Lash, which you can use to swing, shoot and grab stuff. This wouldn’t be a Nintendo game however, if there wasn’t some Amiibo functionality shoved in. This time: God Mode. By pairing the Chibi Robo Amiibo (which actually looks pretty cool and will be sold out about 4 seconds after launch), you will be able to run faster, shooter further and unlock some in-game items.

Dr. Mario Miracle Cure for the 3DS, release on June 11th

It’s Dr. Mario (and Luigi). NEEEXT!

Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon 3DS, sometime during winter

Only comes with 720 Pokemon out of the box. No word yet on the possibility of a 1080p...okemon patch. You will play as one of 20 different Pokemon, as opposed to a Pokemon trainer. Haven't played a previous one, so no idea how that exactly works.

Mario & Sonic are doing the Olympics again, on both 3DS and WiiU

Since the next stop on the immensely expensive and completely uninteresting Olympic Games is Rio, this game will take place in… yeah, I kinda written myself into a corner there.
WiiU and 3DS will feature some different sports, so you will find for example Rugby exclusively on the WiiU and Golf exclusively on the 3DS.

Splatoon is getting the Zapper

It’s a rapid fire weapon, which isn’t powerful, but offers lots of ink capacity and quickly charges up the echo locator special. Want more? How about a new map! Both are available starting today, 7pm pacific and are free. Ranked battles are also finally available.

Art Academy Home Studio for the WiiU

A new updated version of Art Academy is coming to the eShop on June 25th, featuring new lessons, the ability to upload time lapse videos of your paintings to YouTube, 360° landscapes, and even more new lessons.

Other Stuff

The above trailer for Project Treasure.
There is an LBX 3DS game that looks pretty cool.
Bravely Default sequel Bravely Second is coming to the west.

Puh, that’s it.

New Nintendo eShop Releases: Splatoon, Mega May (Finale)

This week sees the launch of Nintendo's first online multiplayer third-person shooter. And it's kid-friendly, no less! Color me intrigued (pardon the pun). Although, from what I hear, the game isn't compatible with the Pro Controller. Which seems a bit ridiculous, if you ask me. Also this week, Mega May comes to a close with the release of not one, but three Mega Man games! Well, two really, if you count Red Sun and Blue Moon as the same game (which they essentially are). Still, the surprise addition of Mega Man Zero 3 is not a bad way to wrap things up. Now, go fill your Super Soakers with paint and then jump past the break to see more of this week's new releases.

Project CARS WiiU might become Project CARS NX

Are you looking forward to Project CARS? I guess that means you are a WiiU owner, because every other platform already saw it released. Bad news, buddy. Looks like the game might not see a release on the WiiU after all.
According to Slightly Mad Studios boss Ian Bell, the game is currently running at 23ftps/720p on the WiiU. "Honestly, unless we really cut the looks back I think we're looking to Nintendo's next console."

So the NX then? There are 2 issues with that. The first and obvious one: We don’t know squat about the NX, and according to Bell, neither does Slightly Mad. What if it’s a Popcorn making machine? I don’t want to play Project CARS to the sound of pop…pop…popop….…pop.
The second one, also the most pressing one: The game was crowdfunded and the WiiU version was promised during that process. So it’s back to the old crowdfunding discussion.

Bell also mentions that they could make it run at 30fps, but he fears that halfway through them finishing the port, Nintendo might announce a new console. If they could be early to release on it, they would clearly be the best driving sim for a while.

Personally, I don’t see a WiiU port of Project CARS as something worthwhile in the first place. Playing the game with anything other than a racing wheel is far from fun, and the WiiU doesn’t offer one. And at least they don’t just release a half-assed copy like Ubisoft (remember Watch Dogs WiiU?)

No 3D for Dragon Quest VIII 3DS

Well that's a shame. The 3DS version of Dragon Quest VIII will not support one of the system's main features, 3D mode! This has been revealed in the latest issue of Famitsu.
I was eagerly looking forward to seeing those vistas in 3D, on foot and while flying! The cel shaded battles and cutscenes would have looked brilliant. Are you disappointed, or do you think the 3D is all very gimmicky?

Wii U Getting Unity 5

Nintendo's Wii U will be officially supported with the 5th release of the Unity game engine, allowing easier ports to the platform, resulting in a wider variety of games for owners.
Games like Cities: Skylines, Mobius Final Fantasy, Ori and the Blind Forest, Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty!, Hearthstone, and Gone Home were developed using Unity, and now bringing such digital content to the Wii U just got easier. Are there any Unity games you feel would be a good match for the platform?

Nintendo @ E3: What We Know

Deciding to skip a traditional E3 press conference yet again, Nintendo will present a digital show, and have a few demonstrations and playable games on the show floor. Check out what we know about this year's appearance at the showroom.

  • Iwata won't be at E3 for the second year in a row. His focus at the time will be on the business side of things, while developers such as Shigeru Miyamoto present the games.

  • A Star Fox game for the Wii U will be playable at E3 in some form, something "that everyone can play" according to its director Shigeru Miyamoto.

  • Nintendo's Treehouse will hold live streams from the show floor June 16th to the 18th, focusing on "in depth game coverage and behind the scenes info" according to their promotional site.

  • Mario Maker sessions will be held at Best Buys around the US on June 17th from 4-9pm and June 20th 12-5pm local time.

Tell us if you think Nintendo's strategy of pre-recorded shows is working for E3, and are there any surprises you're hoping for this year? Let us know in the comments!
